Strength, Power and Electromyographic Performance of Hip Musculature in Older Female Fallers and Non-fallers

چکیده
Falling is a serious problem in the elderly, mainly due to its negative impact on the quality of life of this population and increased public health costs (Bento et al. 2010). The etiology of falls is multifactorial, so developing a broad understanding of the biomechanical and physiological factors associated with increased risk of falling in the elderly is extremely important (LaRoche et al. 2010). It is known that the weakness of hip muscles can challenge balance during gait and impair rapid torque production (Mendis et al. 2009). The neuromuscular performance of the ankle and knee musculature has been well studied in fallers and non-fallers but a comprehensive comparison of hip function is lacking, despite some authors considering it crucial in the prevention of falls (Wert et al. 2010). Thus, this study aimed to compare the neuromuscular capacity of older female fallers and non-fallers during hip flexion, extension, abduction and adduction.

Gluteal muscle composition differentiates fallers from non-fallers in community dwelling older adults
BACKGROUND Impaired balance, loss of mobility and falls are major problems associated with changes in muscle in older adults. However, the extent to which muscle composition and related performance measures for different lower limb muscles are associated with falls in older individuals is unclear. This study evaluated lower limb muscle attenuation, intramuscular adipose tissue (IMAT) infiltrati...
متن کاملHip muscle and hand-grip strength to differentiate between older fallers and non-fallers: a cross-sectional validity study
Background Hip muscle weakness in older people seems to be an influencing factor of falls. Currently, it is unclear which muscles out of the hip muscle group play an important role in older people. A validating process in the measurement regarding muscle strength related to falls is necessary before answering that question. Objective Firstly, we aimed to investigate which hip muscle group str...

Objectives: This study aimed to identify elderly fallers and non-fallers by balance test under dual tasks conditions. Methods & Materials: This study was an analyze-comparative study. Subjects were from three park of Tehran. متن کاملLower extremity muscle performance associated with community ambulation in elderly fallers
Background. Knowing lower extremity muscle groups associated with community ambulation functions is important for developing physical disability prevention/intervention programmes for older adults experiencing falls. We aimed to identify lower extremity muscle groups significantly associated with walking endurance, walking speed, and stepping performance among community-dwelling elderly fallers...
